Crime in the Caribbean.

Image
CRIME IN THE CARIBBEAN Crime in the Caribbean is not a new problem but an escalating one. Over the last 20 years, the Caribbean has seen a steady increase in robberies, kidnapping, extortion, human trafficking, money laundering and the sale of drugs and guns.     HOW MOST CRIME START While there may be a white-collar crime such as embezzlement and fraud, most criminal activities like robbery and extortion get star ted mostly amongst those under the poverty line. Lack of education leads to less sustainable jobs which put pressure on providing for family and that can influence one to make such a decision.

Problems

HOW HAS THE GOVERNMENT ATTEMPTED TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM Within the Caribbean governments have attempted to assist by initiating a series of programs geared at helping youths make that transition from high school to university and a career. They have also introduced social welfare and the food card system whereby some assistance is rendered to families in need.

Polices

POLICIES THAT CAN HELP 1.I believe if  they change some of the penalties for first, second and   third offenses that will be a deterrent to the crime itself because if you know  that for a petty crime you can lose a couple months for the fist offense but for the third or fourth time, you can lose years for the same crime that should work as a force to propel you in another direction. 2.Have some kind of incentive or point system where for every period that you stay crime free rewards can be earned.  California in the United States has introduced an alternative system for drug offenders where you do community work instead of serving prison time,   I have not heard of any country that has introduced these systems that I mentioned but it's worth a try.

Effects of Crime

EFFECTS OF CRIME Crime has single-handedly caused the public to lose trust in the government in its capacity to deal with crime and crime-related problems. Crime has caused economies that depend on tourism and some places agriculture, to be on the decline
